TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is collaborating with Finland to deepen bilateral cooperation in green energy and education, and to seek the Nordic country's support in its accession process to the OECD.
This dual strategy was conveyed by the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Sugiono, during the meeting with the Finnish Ambassador to Indonesia, Pekka Kaihilahti, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, June 5, 2025. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral and strategic multilateral partnerships for Indonesia.
Finland is seen as an ideal partner due to its excellence in energy transition, environmental technology, and high-quality education systems. This expertise aligns with Indonesia's national development priorities, which are currently focused on transitioning towards a green economy.
Investment data shows significant untapped potential. Finland's investment in Indonesia in 2024 reached US$22.2 million spread across 119 projects. Foreign Minister Sugiono encourages more intensive investment, particularly in green energy, education, healthcare, digital infrastructure, and sustainable infrastructure sectors.
The trade relations between the two countries have also shown positive trends over the past two years, providing a strong foundation for broader economic cooperation expansion.
The multilateral aspect is an important dimension of this meeting. Indonesia expects Finland's support in the accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), an organization of advanced economies that is a strategic target of Indonesia's economic diplomacy.
The Indonesia-Finland partnership is expected to accelerate the energy transition, improve education quality, and pave the way for Indonesia to join the prestigious global economic club.
