Indonesia Sees Increase in Foreign Tourist Visits Amid Global Challenges

4 hours ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Head of the Indonesian Government Communications Agency (Bakom RI), Muhammad Qodari, stated that there has been an increase in foreign tourist visits to Indonesia from January to April 2026, amid the current geopolitical dynamics and global economic uncertainty.

As reported by ANTARA, in a press conference at the Bakom RI Office Auditorium in Jakarta on Wednesday, Qodari stated that based on data as of June 14, 2026, the number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia reached 4.68 million visits in January-April 2026, showing an increase of 8.24 percent compared to 4.33 million in the same period in 2025.

"This growth has been maintained amid global geopolitical dynamics and global economic uncertainty, supported by an adaptive marketing strategy," Qodari explained.

Not only did the number of visits increase, but the quality of visits also improved, as evidenced by a 5.36 percent increase in average foreign tourist spending to US$1,345.61 (approximately Rp22.68 million) per visit. Foreign exchange from the tourism sector also grew 6.30 percent, equivalent to Rp68.28 trillion, compared to the same period last year.

"Overall, in the first quarter of 2026, the tourism sector's contribution to GDP, or gross domestic product, is estimated to be in the range of 4.01 to 5.00 percent, equivalent to Rp248 trillion to Rp309 trillion," Qodari added.

He said the government continues to make several efforts to improve the performance of the tourism sector, including developing tourist villages and various tourism events. Currently, there are more than 6,200 tourist villages spread across Indonesia.

Qodari also stated that the Ministry of Tourism continues to pursue quality improvements, including collaboration with the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) and mentoring with strategic partners.

The government is targeting 125 events across 30 provinces throughout 2026. He revealed that 38 events have been realized so far, attracting 1.19 million visitors and generating an economic turnover of Rp85 billion.
