TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized Indonesia's support for every effort to bring peace and political stability to Myanmar.
"In essence, we support all efforts to bring peace and political stability to Myanmar, undertaken within Myanmar itself," Sugiono said in a brief interview in Jakarta on Thursday, as quoted by Antara.
According to Sugiono, Indonesia considers Myanmar elections acceptable if they promote peace and a ceasefire, as well as the implementation of the five-point consensus. The elections must also be inclusive of all Myanmar people. In this context, he continued, Indonesia also sent observers to monitor the election process objectively.
Sugiono said that if the new Myanmar government is recognized as inclusive by the Myanmar people and can bring peace and resolve domestic problems, then it must be respected. He also emphasized that Indonesia, in principle, supports all internal efforts in Myanmar aimed at achieving political stability and peace.
Regarding the possibility of Myanmar's new leader attending the ASEAN Summit in the Philippines, Sugiono stated that the Philippines is monitoring the situation. He added that a joint decision will be made through consensus among ASEAN countries.
Myanmar's former military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, was officially inaugurated as the country's new president on April 10, 2026. Min Aung Hlaing won the parliamentary vote on April 3, 2026, by receiving 429 out of 500 votes.
Myanmar's first election since 2020 will take place in three stages from December 2025 to January 2026. This follows nearly five years of military rule under a state of emergency that was imposed in February 2021 due to national security threats.
The Union Solidarity and Development Party, which previously led Myanmar's government from 2011 to 2015, won the election with former senior general Min Aung Hlaing as its presidential candidate.
