TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesia U-17 national team has completed its three matches in Group H of the 2025 U-17 World Cup, earning three points and leaving its hopes of advancing to the round of 32 uncertain.
Unlike two years ago, when Indonesia automatically qualified as the host nation, this year’s team earned its spot through the qualification route.
After reaching the quarter-finals of the 2025 U-17 Asia Cup in April, Garuda Muda secured its place in the tournament in Qatar this November.
One of Four Asian Representatives
Under coach Nova Arianto, Indonesia became the group winner at the 2025 U-17 Asia Cup in Saudi Arabia last April. The team defeated South Korea 1-0, Yemen 4-1, and Afghanistan 2-0.
Their run ended in the quarter-finals with a 0-6 loss to North Korea. Despite the defeat, advancing to the quarter-finals secured Indonesia a spot in the World Cup.
Indonesia is one of four Asian teams at the tournament, alongside hosts Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Uzbekistan.
Group H Challenges: Facing Brazil, Zambia, and Honduras
Drawn into Group H with Zambia, Brazil, and Honduras, Indonesia faced a tough schedule. The team lost 1-3 to Zambia in the opening match and then suffered a 0-4 defeat to four-time U-17 champions Brazil.
The final group match, however, ended on a high note with a 2-1 victory over Honduras, thanks to goals from Evandra Florasta and Alberto Hengga.
These results place Indonesia in third place in the group with three points and a goal difference of -5. On the temporary ranking of third-placed teams across all groups, the squad stands ninth. Their progression to the round of 32 now hinges on the outcomes of other matches.
Match Highlights
vs Zambia (1-3): Zahaby Gholy scored early in the 12th minute to give Indonesia the lead, but Zambia responded with two goals before halftime through Abel Nyirongo (35’ and 37’). The second half saw Indonesia unable to equalize.
vs Brazil (0-4): Brazil scored early at three minutes through Luis Eduardo, followed by an own goal from Putu Panji, then Filipe Morais and a fourth goal before full-time sealed Indonesia’s defeat.
vs Honduras (2-1): Evandra Florasta converted a penalty in the 52nd minute, followed by a quick equalizer from Luis Suazo. Alberto Hengga scored the winner in the 72nd minute, giving Indonesia its first-ever U-17 World Cup victory.
A Historic First Victory
The win over Honduras secured third place in Group H and represents a historic milestone for Indonesian football. In the 2023 U-17 World Cup, which Indonesia hosted, the team recorded no victories, finishing with two draws and one defeat under Bima Sakti. At that time, they ranked sixth among third-placed teams.
This year, the tournament expanded to 48 teams, double the number from 2023, meaning the path to the knockout stage is more competitive, with advancement for third-placed teams possible only through ranking among the best performers.
While Indonesia’s chances of reaching the round of 32 remain slim, Indonesia has already set a new record: its first-ever win in a U-17 World Cup, a significant step forward in the development of the national youth football program.
