TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The American online forum platform Reddit is once again accessible to users in Indonesia after 11 long years. All features on Reddit, including the homepage, comments section, and user profiles, are all accessible without requiring a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
According to ANTARA on Friday, the website is accessible from Chrome and Safari browsers on mobile phones, tablets, and laptops.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) has normalized Indonesian users' access to Reddit after the online forum platform provider complied with the country's laws.
"Kemkomdigi approved the normalization of access to reddit.com after conducting a hearing and reviewing compliance with applicable regulations in Indonesia," the ministry's Director General of Digital Space Supervision, Alexander Sabar, told Antara on Friday.
Reddit, he said, has implemented geoblocking for Indonesia, restricting access and removing content related to gambling, pornography, and other illegal content.
Subsequently, Kemkomdigi warned Reddit platform providers that they are required to register their business entities as electronic system operators (PSE) and comply with applicable regulations in Indonesia.
"If illegal content is later found accessible in Indonesia, Kemkomdigi will take appropriate action in accordance with applicable regulations," said Alexander Sabar.
Access to Reddit for users in Indonesia has been blocked since 2015, as the government deemed the platform rife with content that violated Indonesia's censorship regulations.
This policy had forced Indonesians to use VPN services or alternative DNS servers to access Reddit, an online forum platform founded in the United States in 2005.
Reddit, dubbed the "front page of the internet," is a place for users to interact and discuss shared hobbies, topics, and interests.
Reddit houses hundreds of subcommunities known as subreddits, with each of their own community-set rules. Every subreddit focuses on particular topics, such as current trends, technology, politics, music, hobbies, and entertainment.
The content appearing on the platform originates from users, known as redditors. Redditors can upload text, images, videos, or links, which can then be commented on or rated by other users through an upvote and downvote system.
This system allows the community to determine the popularity of a post. The more upvotes a post receives, the higher its position within the subreddit and on Reddit's main page.
Users can access specific subreddits through a special address in the format "reddit.com/r/" followed by the name of the community in question.
