TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has accepted Jose Ramos-Horta's invitation to visit Timor-Leste. The invitation was relayed during both leaders' meeting at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Friday, August 28, 2026.
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, who attended the forum, said Prabowo had responded to the invitation. "President Ramos-Horta invited President Prabowo to visit Timor-Leste. Pak President said, 'Of course it will be on the agenda,'" Fadli said after the meeting.
According to Fadli, President Prabowo told Ramos-Horta that Indonesia assumes a good neighbor policy towards all of its neighboring countries, including "Timor-Leste, Australia, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia."
He said Prabowo is open to opportunities for a wide range of cooperation with the Ramos-Horta administration.
Minister Fadli, however, has yet to announce when Prabowo will make a visit to Timor-Leste.
The Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Arif Satria, who attended the meeting, said that Ramos-Horta and Prabowo had a friendly meeting. "The meeting was held in a commitment to continue the cooperation between Timor-Leste and the Indonesian government," he said after the meeting.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said the meeting was part of the effort to strengthen ties between the two countries, as well as make way for the opportunities to partner in the fields of the environment, research, higher education, science, and innovation.
Prabowo's meeting with Ramos-Horta lasted more than an hour.
Ramos-Horta was accompanied by twenty Nobel laureates from various countries when they met Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace.
Prabowo also invited the Nobel laureates to collaborate with Indonesia, to share their knowledge and experience with researchers and academics in the country.
