Indonesia Will Send Medical Teams to Aid Quake-Struck Myanmar

1 day ago 2

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian government will deploy 135 personnel to aid the victims of the Myanmar earthquake, consisting of medical teams and a delegation team, said the head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Lieutenant General Suharyanto. According to him, the personnel will head to Myanmar tomorrow, Thursday, April 3, 2025.

The personnel will depart on a Garuda 747-800 aircraft, led by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, Pratikno, and is expected to be inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto.

Another aircraft to depart in conjunction with the medical team’s plane is filled with necessary supplies for the quake-struck communities, weighing around 80 tons. ”Both aircraft will depart together on April 3, 2025,” said Suharyanto.

Suharyanto claimed that Indonesia is helping to alleviate the suffering of the Myanmar people due to the destructive earthquake that struck the country on Friday. According to him, the aid is sent upon the request of the Myanmar shadow government.

"We can be proud that the Indonesian government is very concerned about the people of other countries who are currently suffering from disasters," said Suharyanto.

Earlier today, the Indonesian government also deployed 73 humanitarian task force personnel to assist the earthquake victims in Myanmar today, Tuesday, April 1. The task force consists of BNPB, the National SAR Agency, the military, the Zakat Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and others.

According to Suharyanto, the team departed on a Boeing 747 aircraft. He explained that BNPB will be responsible for coordinating all operations in Myanmar, from ensuring the smooth running of the operation to managing budgetary issues.

Meanwhile, the National SAR Agency personnel in the task force will help in finding victims, both alive and deceased. "BNPB will be responsible for coordinating and preparing other facilities," he said.

The day before, the government had also deployed 39 people from various institutions in what the government called Indonesia’s Aju Team.

The Aju Team was deployed on a Hercules C-130J-30 Super Hercules A-1342 aircraft with a capacity of carrying 12 to 15 tons of logistics and equipment. The Indonesian government sent about 20 multipurpose tents, blankets, sarongs, and ready-to-eat meals from the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, additional logistics from BNPB, and one truck from the National SAR Agency for on-site operations.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake devastated parts of Myanmar and killed over 2,000 people, with many more missing and injured. This inland doublet earthquake not only caused destruction in Myanmar but also impacted Thailand.
