TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's National Food Agency has distributed 72.6 tons of food aid to North Sumatra, one of the provinces severely affected by recent floods.
“This aid will continue to increase,” said Rachmi Widiriani, Director of Distribution and Food Reserves at the National Food Agency, in a statement on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
The food assistance has reached multiple districts and cities in North Sumatra, including Langkat Regency, Tebing Tinggi City, Binjai Regency, North Tapanuli Regency, and Humbang Hasundutan Regency.
The supplies come from the region’s food reserves, and the agency plans to increase distribution in response to requests from the North Sumatra Governor.
State-owned enterprise Bulog is handling the distribution on the ground, and additional supplies will soon be delivered under the agency’s coordination.
National Food Agency Head Amran Sulaiman has called for distribution posts in flood-affected areas across Sumatra to operate 24 hours a day and for logistics routes to remain clear to ensure smooth delivery.
Beyond immediate food relief, Amran has instructed authorities to assess damage to rice fields and other agricultural land. An aid scheme is being prepared for farmers and livestock breeders in the three hardest-hit provinces.
“Seeds and animal medicines have been prepared. I have asked the Directors General to focus on helping our farmers and breeders. All efforts are aimed at assisting the people,” he said.
The agency has prepared a total of 34,000 tons of rice and 6.8 million liters of cooking oil for Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
Aceh will receive 10,614 tons of rice and 1,954 tons of cooking oil; North Sumatra is allocated 16,894 tons of rice and 3,108 tons of cooking oil; and West Sumatra will receive 6,795 tons of rice and 1,250 tons of cooking oil.
