Indonesian Migrant Workers to Receive Training as Tourism Ambassadors

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Tourism partners with the Ministry of Migrant Workers Protection (P2MI) to train Indonesian migrant workers to become tourism ambassadors. The initiative aims to boost the role of migrant workers in national tourism development, community empowerment, and international promotion for Indonesia's tourism.

Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana and Minister of Migrant Workers Protection Abdul Kadir Karding signed a memorandum of understanding at the P2MI Ministry office in Jakarta on Monday, July 14, 2025. "This collaboration is expected to drive equitable development and bring about a more tangible independence when migrant workers are empowered to build the nation and leverage tourism as a source of prosperity," said Widiyanti in a written statement.

She mentioned that her ministry will prepare the Wonderful Indonesia Hospitality Skills training. This program will equip prospective Indonesian migrant workers with basic tourism skills as well as hospitality services.

"Through this training, Indonesian migrant workers are expected to appear more confident, communicative, and bring a positive image of Indonesia in their interactions abroad," she said.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Tourism will synergize the Village Tourism program with the Educational, Advanced, Safe, and Prosperous Migrant Village program, abbreviated as EMAS Migrant Villages.

"We will push for the development of EMAS Migrant Villages into tourist villages with the strength of their culture, nature, and local wisdom as their attraction," said Widiyanti.

According to the minister, migrant workers serve as a representation of Indonesia overseas, and this makes them a diplomatic force that conveys cultural messages through real interactions in the countries where they work.

Minister Abdul Kadir Karding said that his ministry cannot work alone to protect the workers and improve their capabilities; hence, the initiative "is integral in the efforts to boost the skills of Indonesian migrant workers."

According to data from the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, migrant workers contributed US$14.22 billion in foreign exchange in 2023, or 1.05 percent of Indonesia's GDP. This remittance increased by 10.68 percent compared to the previous year, with a value of US$12.85 billion.
