TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For many hiking enthusiasts, August 17th is a special moment to hoist the Indonesian flag at a mountain's summit. Usually, hikers meticulously prepare for their ascent well before Independence Day.

However, not all hiking trails will be open in the lead-up to Indonesia's 80th anniversary of independence. Several mountains across Indonesia have temporarily closed access for various reasons, including safety concerns, natural conditions, or local community considerations.

Two Hiking Trails of Merbabu Closed

The Mount Merbabu National Park Office (BTNGM) announced closures via its official Instagram account, @btn_gn_merbabu, on Monday, July 28, 2025. The two affected paths are the Selo hiking route, which will be closed from August 2 to August 3, 2025, and the Thekelan hiking route, closed from August 1 to August 31, 2025.

Announcement Number: PG.14/T.35/TU/HMS.01.08/B/07/2025 explains that these closures are due to the 'Merapi Merbabu De Trail 2025' trail run event and ongoing maintenance of the Thekelan hiking path.

Additionally, BTNGM will limit the climber quota on the Suwanting hiking route to a maximum of 138 people, effective from August 3, 2025. Management also reminds prospective hikers planning to hike Mount Merbabu to make online bookings through their website, www.tngunungmerbabu.org.

Closure of Mount Rinjani

The Mount Rinjani National Park Office (TNGR) in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) will temporarily close climbing access to Mount Rinjani from August 1-10, 2025. This closure is for the repair of hiking paths, aimed at enhancing visitor safety.

"The repair of these hiking paths is carried out at vulnerable points, starting from Plawangan Sembalun towards Lake Segara Anak," said Head of TNGR NTB Yarman in Mataram, on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, as quoted by Antara.

Maintenance work on the hiking path facilities includes the installation of stairs, ropes, and steps to transform rocks into stairs, as well as the placement of safety iron along the climbing path.

Yarman further explained that the maintenance team has completed widening work in the Banyu Urip area, including the installation of stones and the creation of steps around the lower end of the handrail.

"The Torean hiking trail is known as the Jurassic Park of Mount Rinjani, offering stunning natural beauty, but this beauty is also accompanied by challenging terrain that requires special attention," he added.
