TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Iranian government has invited Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to visit Tehran, according to Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani.

Muzani said the invitation was conveyed by Iranian officials during his visit to Mashhad to attend the funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

"The Iranian government hopes to invite the President of the Republic of Indonesia to visit Tehran," Muzani said after meeting with the Supreme Court in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Muzani said the invitation had been delivered to Prabowo after he returned from Iran. However, he said he was not yet aware of the president’s response.

"The invitation has been conveyed to Mr. Prabowo," he said.

Muzani and Foreign Minister Sugiono traveled to Mashhad on Thursday, July 9, as representatives of Prabowo to attend Khamenei’s funeral.

During the visit, Muzani said the Indonesian delegation was received directly by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who also serves as Iran’s chief negotiator in talks with the United States.

"Dr. Mohammad Ghalibaf conveyed his warm greetings to the people of Indonesia, as well as to the Indonesian government," Muzani said.

Representing the Indonesian government and people, Muzani also expressed condolences over Khamenei’s death and conveyed Indonesia’s sympathy to the Iranian people.

"We extend our condolences. We understand the sadness felt by the Iranian people over the passing of a leader who was deeply loved. The Indonesian people pray that the Iranian people will remain strong in facing this loss," he said.
