TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Jakarta provides clarification on the protests and riots in Iran since December 28, 2025. This is due to foreign media reports that the security crackdown in Iran has led to an increase in the number of casualties among demonstrators, civilians, and security forces.

Based on a statement sent to Tempo on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the protests were initially triggered by exchange rate fluctuations. This led to demonstrations by labor unions, businesspeople, and traders in Tehran. The protests affected businesses and reduced purchasing power.

From the start, the protests were peaceful, and the demonstrators sought to voice their demands peacefully without disrupting public order. Their main demand was for the government to restore market stability and implement effective economic measures.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to the right of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly in accordance with the constitution and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

"All relevant authorities and institutions have acknowledged the legitimate and peaceful demands of citizens and are addressing them," the embassy stated.

However, the Iranian government emphasized a clear distinction between legitimate protests and organized violence. The embassy accused foreign intervention of exacerbating the situation.

It is alleged that small elements affiliated with foreign movements infiltrated, causing damage to public property, attacks on the police, and the use of firearms.

These actions are considered to violate international human rights law.

The Iranian embassy also highlighted the role of foreign actors, especially the United States and Israel, in provoking the situation through open statements.

"In this regard, the Islamic Republic of Iran has expressed deep and serious concern regarding the attitudes and blatant interventions of certain foreign actors, particularly the United States and the Zionist regime," the statement continued.
