TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 56,500 residents of Palestine have been killed in Israel's genocidal war in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, said the Health Ministry on Sunday.
A ministry statement said that 88 bodies were brought to hospitals in the last 24 hours, with 365 others injured, bringing the total number of injuries to 133,419 in Israeli attacks since October 2023.
"Many victims are still trapped under the rubble and on the roads because rescue teams cannot reach them,"
The ministry also noted that 18 Palestinians were killed and more than 41 injured while seeking humanitarian aid at U.S. distribution centers in the last 24 hours.
Thus, the total number of deaths of Palestinian residents seeking aid has reached 583, with another 4,186 injured since May 27.
The death toll in Gaza has been reported much higher by various Israeli sources.
Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Friday that nearly 100,000 Palestinians have died as a result of Israel's genocide in Gaza, equivalent to about four percent of the total population of the Palestinian enclave.
According to Haaretz, the high number of Palestinian deaths is not only due to Israel's heinous attacks. Many have also died due to indirect impacts of the war such as hunger, cold, and diseases amidst the collapse of the health system in Gaza.
On Wednesday, a study published through Harvard Dataverse revealed that Israel is accused of "eliminating" at least 377,000 Palestinians since the start of the genocide in the Gaza Strip in 2023.
Half of this number is believed to be Palestinian children. The report was authored by Israeli professor Yaakov Garb as cited by The Cradle.
The report used data-driven analysis and spatial mapping to show how the Israeli military siege in Gaza and indiscriminate attacks on Palestinian civilians in the enclave have caused a serious population decline.
The approximately 377,000 Palestinians whose whereabouts are unknown due to Israel's genocide are roughly 17 percent of the entire Gaza Strip population, which now stands at around 1.85 million people.
The Israeli military continued its assault on the Gaza Strip on March 18 and has since killed 6,175 people and injured 21,378 others, shattering the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement in place since January.
Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war in the enclave.
