Israeli Settler Attacks on Palestinians Surge to Record High in October

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli settlers carried out at least 264 attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank during October, marking the highest monthly total since the United Nations began tracking such incidents in 2006, the UN reported on Friday, as cited by Al Arabiya.

In a statement warning of a sharp rise in violence, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) revealed that these attacks, which have caused casualties and property damage, averaged eight incidents per day.

"Since 2006, OCHA has documented more than 9,600 such attacks, with around 1,500 occurring this year—about 15 percent of the total," the UN agency said.

The West Bank, home to 2.7 million Palestinians, has long been central to the prospect of a future Palestinian state alongside Israel. However, Israeli settlement expansion continues at a rapid pace, increasingly fragmenting the region.

The UN, the Palestinian Authority, and the majority of the international community regard these settlements as illegal under international law, though Israel denies this. Over half a million Israeli settlers now reside in the West Bank.

OCHA also reported that, according to confirmed data up until Wednesday, 42 Palestinian children have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank this year.

"This means that one in every five Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank in 2025 has been a child," OCHA added.

The Israeli Mission to the United Nations has yet to respond to requests for comment.

Settler Violence Amid Gaza Ceasefire

Despite a ceasefire brokered by the United States that has largely halted fighting in Gaza and facilitated the return of hostages, settler violence in the West Bank has continued unabated.

As Al Jazeera reported, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has accelerated settlement expansion during the ongoing Gaza conflict, drawing widespread condemnation from the UN and international human rights groups.

Right-wing extremist Israeli politicians, including members of Netanyahu's coalition government, have also called for the formal annexation of the West Bank.

In July, the UN human rights office warned that the escalating violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank was occurring "with the approval, support, and in some cases, the participation of Israeli security forces."

These settler and military attacks, the UN said, are part of a broader Israeli strategy to expand and consolidate control over the occupied West Bank, further entrenching a system of discrimination, oppression, and control over the Palestinian population.
