TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo reminded his staff to prepare for the potential economic impact of the El Nino on the capital city.
"The BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency) has officially announced that El Nino will begin mid-April and continue through September. This means that sooner or later, it will definitely impact the Jakarta Provincial Government," Pramono said at City Hall on Thursday, as quoted by Antara.
He says that El Nino conditions can affect various sectors, including food availability and market price stability.
In addition to the impact of El Nino, Pramono reminded his staff to prepare for challenges amid other global pressures. These include the geopolitical conflict between the United States and Iran, which could disrupt the supply chain and cause energy prices to increase.
Therefore, he asked the Jakarta Provincial Government to prepare short-term anticipatory measures to maintain regional economic stability. Despite the various challenges he faces, Pramono remains optimistic that he can maintain Jakarta's economy.
Conversely, the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN/Bappenas) is pushing for Jakarta's economic growth to reach 6.3-7.4 percent by 2027 in order to meet the national economic growth target of 6.3-7.5 percent.
"We hope that Jakarta can drive growth in the range of 6.3-7.4 percent in 2027, accompanied by improvements in the quality of human resources, reductions in poverty, unemployment, and inequality," said Vivi Yulaswati, Deputy for Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation at the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN).
He is optimistic that Jakarta, the center of Indonesia's national economy and a global city that contributes 16.5 percent to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), can help maintain economic growth above five percent.
