TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Jakarta police have named 49 people as suspects in connection with unrest during a protest outside the House of Representatives and People’s Consultative Assembly (DPR/MPR) complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on August 27.
Jakarta Metro Police spokesperson Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto said 44 of the suspects are adults being investigated by the police’s general crimes division. The remaining five are minors in conflict with the law and are being handled by police units responsible for women, children and juvenile cases.
49 Suspects Identified From 322 Detainees
The 49 suspects were identified from 322 people detained by police during the protest, based on the latest verification and cross-checking of investigative data, Budi said on Tuesday, September 1.
He said the other 273 people who had been detained were released after undergoing questioning and verification.
Budi also clarified earlier information concerning three people who were allegedly carrying bladed weapons. The three were part of the 49 suspects and were not additional suspects counted separately, he said.
The latest police figures put the number of suspects at 49 out of the 322 people detained in connection with the unrest.
Police had previously said that 45 people had been named suspects following clashes and alleged violence after the protest outside the DPR/MPR complex on August 27.
Police Divide Detainees Into Six Groups
Jakarta Metro Police General Crimes Director Senior Commissioner Iman Imannudin said on August 28 that investigators had divided those detained into six groups based on their alleged roles, evidence and witness accounts.
The first group consisted of 153 people under the age of 18 who were handed over to the police unit handling women, children and human trafficking cases for further investigation.
According to Iman, the group included 25 school dropouts, two 12-year-olds, one 13-year-old, three 14-year-olds, 23 15-year-olds, 47 16-year-olds, 64 17-year-olds and 10 people aged 18. Three of them were girls.
The second group consisted of 91 adults whom police categorized as ordinary rioters.
45 Suspects Linked to Alleged Damage, Assault
The third group comprised 71 people allegedly involved in damaging public facilities and assault following the protest. Police had named 45 of them as suspects at the time.
The fourth group consisted of three people allegedly found carrying bladed weapons during the unrest. All three were named suspects, police said.
Investigators also identified a fifth group that they alleged acted as instigators and financiers, while a sixth group allegedly recruited people to create disorder, Iman said.
Police have not publicly detailed the identities or specific alleged conduct of people in the fifth and sixth groups in the information provided.
