TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Parliament (DPR/MPR) Complex in Jakarta's Senayan remains under the guard of Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel following the massive demonstrations that erupted in late August.

Deputy Chair of Commission XIII DPR, Andreas Hugo Pareira, explained that the deployment of TNI troops was based on security assessments.

“Security cannot only be measured by what is visible today. An incident can suddenly erupt, just like what happened yesterday,” Andreas said at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

The PDIP politician emphasized that the presence of TNI soldiers is meant to ensure stability and safety for lawmakers and staff. “Everyone working here needs to feel secure,” he said, adding that security forces, including intelligence units, play a crucial role in preventing unrest.

Earlier, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin confirmed that guarding the DPR building will continue under state defense institutions. He said the decision was taken after discussions with TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto and the chiefs of staff of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

“The DPR complex will be guarded by the TNI until conditions are more conducive,” Sjafrie said after a meeting with Commission I DPR on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

He added that TNI deployment is not limited to Parliament but will also cover other government facilities deemed vulnerable.

“This is to ensure that the people can work safely and comfortably,” said Sjafrie, who also serves as Acting Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs.

The unrest began on August 25, 2025, when student and labor groups rallied in Jakarta to protest the lavish perks and facilities enjoyed by DPR members.

Tensions escalated after August 28, when an online motorcycle taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan, was fatally struck by a Jakarta Metro Police's Mobile Brigade vehicle during protests in Bendungan Hilir, Central Jakarta.

The incident triggered widespread anger across Jakarta and other regions. Toward the end of August, riots intensified, with unidentified groups burning government buildings, police stations, and public facilities.
