TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said on Thursday, June 18, that the recent war had destroyed some 68,000 housing units and damaged nearly 18 percent of Lebanon's territory, underscoring the enormity of the challenges the country faces in its recovery and reform efforts.
As reported by ANTARA, Aoun made the remarks during a meeting with foreign delegations, according to a statement released by the Lebanese Presidency.
Aoun said Lebanon was still suffering the effects of the war, which he said killed more than 3,500 people, including 245 children, injured 11,000 others, and displaced approximately 1 million. Some victims are still buried under the rubble.
He said the damage extended beyond military targets to include residential buildings, roads, electricity facilities, water infrastructure, schools, and hospitals. This made it difficult for displaced residents to return before reconstruction efforts began.
In addition, Aoun also reaffirmed his government's commitment to economic, financial, administrative and judicial reforms.
Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon have entered a new round of clashes since March 2. Although a ceasefire agreement was reached in April, Israel has continued to launch attacks in southern Lebanon.
