TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Romanian Energy Ministry State Secretary Sorin Elisei announced on Thursday that Cernavoda nuclear power plant had temporarily stopped operating due to low water levels in the Danube River. Authorities plan to cover the resulting electricity supply shortage through imports.
The first of two reactors at Cernavoda was shut down last week due to low water levels in the Danube. The Romanian government declared a high state of alert in the energy sector on July 31 due to declining electricity production amid the drought. The shutdown of the second reactor also began on Thursday.
According to news.ro, citing ANTARA, Elisei said the Cernavoda nuclear power plant has completely ceased operations, leaving Romania reliant on increased electricity imports, mainly from Bulgaria, while closely monitoring weather forecasts that could affect supply estimates.
He added that authorities are also relying on hydro energy reserves and voluntary reductions in electricity consumption within the country.
Earlier on August 6, Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant Director Romeo Urjan said the plant would be out of service for at least 10 days. Once the Danube water level rises, it will take one to two days for the plant to return to full operation.
Cernavoda is Romania's only nuclear power plant. Located on the banks of the Danube River, it uses river water to cool its reactors, so water levels directly affect the unit's safe operation.
The plant's two reactors contribute about 20 percent of Romania's total electricity production.
