TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Lyrid meteor shower phenomenon is set to reach its peak on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, with relatively dark skies, free from the interference of moonlight. This event is one of the most eagerly anticipated sky phenomena in spring.
As one of the oldest recorded meteor showers, the Lyrids offer observers the chance to witness "shooting stars" and potentially bright "fireballs" in the dark night sky.
The phenomenon runs from April 14 to 30, with its peak intensity expected on April 22. During this peak period, the visible meteor count is estimated to reach around 10 to 20 per hour, providing opportunities for observation both before dawn and after sunset.
The optimal viewing conditions are anticipated to occur in the early hours, particularly around 5:00 AM, when the radiant point in the Lyra constellation is higher in the sky. The moon's position also supports observation, as its crescent phase sets before sunrise and does not significantly hinder visibility.
While not as intense as the Perseid meteor shower in August or the Geminid in December, the Lyrids are known to produce swift and bright meteors that often leave trails of light. In some cases, this phenomenon can also experience activity spikes.
According to NASA, "As many as 100 Lyrid meteors were reported per hour in 1803, 1922, 1945, and 1982," although such outbursts are rare and challenging to predict.
As reported by Live Science, this meteor shower originates from the remnants of dust and debris from the comet C/1861 G1 (Thatcher), which orbits the Sun every 415.5 years. When the Earth crosses this debris path, the particles will burn up in the atmosphere and appear as "shooting stars" in the night sky.
To have the best chance of observation, it is recommended to observe from locations with minimal light pollution and clear weather conditions. Observers also need to allow time for their eyes to adapt to the darkness, as meteors can appear randomly across the sky.
This phenomenon can be observed with the naked eye, although additional equipment is necessary for those who wish to capture it through photography.
