TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - France plans to recognize Palestine as a state in June 2025, said President Emmanuel Macron, adding that the country will likely do it during a UN conference in New York. The June conference is aimed at settling the Israel-Palestine conflict.
“We must move toward recognition, and we will do so in the coming months,”said Macron during his visit to Egypt, as quoted from Arab News on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
Macron explained that France aims to lead this conference together with Saudi Arabia, to finalize the mutual recognition of a Palestinian state by several parties.
“I believe that at some point it will be right and because I also want to participate in a collective dynamic, which must also allow all those who defend Palestine to recognize Israel in turn, which many of them do not do,” he added.
Macron elaborated that this recognition would enable France to take a firm stand “against those who deny Israel’s right to exist” and commitment to collective security in the region.
France has long advocated for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, including after the attack on October 7, 2023 by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas.
However, Paris's official recognition of the State of Palestine will mark a significant policy change. This step also risks antagonizing Israel.
Prior to this, Macron referred to the resumption of aid to Gaza as a “top priority.” He made this statement during his visit to the city of El-Arish in Egypt, the main transit point for supplies to the war-torn Palestinian territory.
“The situation today is intolerable,” Macron said near the border with Gaza on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, as quoted from Arab News. He called for the “resumption of humanitarian aid as quickly as possible.”
Almost all of the 2.4 million Gazans have been displaced multiple times due to the Israeli military occupation. The Israeli attacks were a response to Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Israel continued its assault on Gaza on March 18, after a nearly two-month ceasefire.
Since March 2, 2025, Israel has blocked the entry of humanitarian aid into the area following a disagreement with Hamas on how to proceed with the ceasefire after its initial phase.
Macron also responded to U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to take over the Gaza Strip and rebuild it into what he called the “Riviera of the Middle East” by displacing the Palestinian population. “It’s not a real estate project,” Macron said. “The reality is that you have two million people locked up... After months and months of bombing, of a terrible war, tens of thousands of people have lost their lives,” he stated.
“You have tens of thousands of children who are mutilated without families. This is what we’re talking about when we talk about Gaza.”
Israel has killed more than 50,800 Palestinian citizens since October 2023, the majority of whom are women and children.
