Malaysia, Japan, China Urge Thailand and Cambodia to End Border Conflict

1 month ago 18

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Three nations have collectively urged Thailand and Cambodia to end their armed border conflict. China, Malaysia, and Japan on Thursday, July 24, 2025, called for negotiations to bring an end to the ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.

Anadolu reported that the three countries expressed concerns over the conflict, which has resulted in civilian casualties. In Thailand, 14 people, including a soldier, have been killed following Bangkok's deployment of F-16 jets and Phnom Penh's launch of rockets across the border. Cambodia has not yet released information on casualties on their side.

Meanwhile, Thailand claimed its attack hit Cambodian military locations, according to the Phnom Penh-based Khmer Times. Villages, including those inhabited by Rohingya, have reportedly been targeted.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian reiterated Beijing's fair and impartial stance. According to Lin, China will continue to press for negotiations and play a constructive role in de-escalating the situation between Thailand and Cambodia.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who leads the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), also called for dialogue, stating that peace is the only option.

Japan, too, urged both countries to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue for a peaceful solution.

The U.S. Embassy in Thailand confirmed it has received reports of the conflict. The U.S. urged its citizens residing or traveling near the Thailand-Cambodia border to follow instructions from Thai security authorities and to consult with local government authorities for the latest information.

The latest clash occurred a day after a Thai soldier lost his leg due to a landmine explosion. Both sides have provided different accounts of who initiated the firing on Thursday. Cambodia has since requested urgent intervention from the UN Security Council.

Diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Thailand have been downgraded to their lowest level in decades, following increased tensions between the two countries since May 28, 2025. At that time, forces exchanged gunfire near the border, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
