TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manchester City has once again asserted its position as a strong candidate for the Premier League title this season. A narrow 1-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor Stadium, early Thursday, April 23, 2026, was enough to unseat Arsenal from the top of the standings and at the same time ensure the hosts' relegation.
Erling Haaland's early goal in the fifth minute made the difference in a match that, on paper, was completely dominated by the visiting team. A calm finish by the Norwegian striker, off an assist from Jeremy Doku, gave Manchester City the lead from the start.
This result brings City's total to 70 points from 33 matches, the same as Arsenal, but with a superior goal difference. The title race is heating up as the season enters its final phase. On the other hand, this defeat dealt a heavy blow to Burnley. They remain in 19th place with 20 points from 34 matches, trailing 13 points behind the safety zone with only four matches remaining.
Despite winning by just one goal, City dominated throughout the match. Burnley briefly threatened through a shot by Jaidon Anthony, but was thwarted by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. After Haaland's opening goal, City continued to apply pressure. Rayan Cherki and Nico O'Reilly had opportunities but were unable to increase the lead. Burnley's goalkeeper Martin Dubravka showed his sharpness under the crossbar.
Entering the second half, City's pressure did not ease. Antoine Semenyo posed a threat, while Haaland almost scored his second goal if the ball had not hit the post. The statistics show an absolute dominance: 28 shots with an expected goal (xG) of 3.5, but only one goal was scored. The effectiveness of finishing became a separate note for Pep Guardiola's team.
Guardiola admitted that the match was not entirely easy. There were tense moments, especially towards the end of the game when the Burnley goalkeeper joined the attack in set-piece situations. However, the Spanish coach emphasized that his team's experience in crucial situations was a significant factor.
He stressed that the more often a team is in contention for the title, the better they handle it. "Experience is important. The more often you are in situations like this, the better you will handle them," Guardiola said, as quoted by ESPN.
He also praised his team's overall performance, although he acknowledged that there were moments that should have been maximized into additional goals. "We created many opportunities. In many matches like this, we usually score a second goal in the final minutes. Based on the chances we had, we deserved it," he said.
The competition at the top of the standings is not likely to ease up in the near future. Arsenal still has the opportunity to reclaim the top spot when they face Newcastle United this weekend. Meanwhile, City must divide their focus as they will face Southampton in the FA Cup semifinals. With a narrow points difference and a tight schedule, the race for the Premier League title this season is guaranteed to last until the final weeks.
