TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A mass shooting occurred in a downtown Manhattan office building on Monday, July 28, 2025, resulting in the deaths of three people, including an off-duty New York City police officer.
The suspect was identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old Los Angeles resident. Tamura died by suicide after the incident. According to reports from Sky News and CNN, identification found on Tamura's body included a weapon carry permit from Las Vegas.
The shooting took place at 345 Park Avenue, a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper that houses the headquarters of investment firm Blackstone and the National Football League (NFL). The building also contains offices for KPMG, the Consulate General of Ireland, and a Bank of America branch.
During the attack, Tamura was reportedly wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying an assault rifle, a detail provided by an anonymous police source to the New York Post.
Several witnesses recounted the harrowing moments of the shooting. Nekeisha Lewis, who was having dinner at the building's plaza, described hearing gunshots.
"We heard the shots and looked up and I saw the wall of the first floor shatter. I realized, ‘Oh my god, this is a shootout.' It feels like being in a war zone. I saw a worker running out; he was running frantically, I thought he was just trying to get away," she said.
It turned out the employee had been shot. Lewis saw a wound on his back. "My colleague in front of me also saw it and saw a wound, which looked like an entry or exit wound in the front, so it may have passed right through," she added. Police transported the victim to the hospital.
The New York Fire Department confirmed that emergency response teams were dispatched to the Park Avenue office building on Monday night following reports of a shooting.
Mayor Eric Adams stated that many people were injured. He posted a video clip on social media urging those still inside the office building to remain in place while police officers conducted floor-by-floor checks. The Democratic mayor also announced his intention to visit the hospital to speak with the families and loved ones of the injured.
