TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 6.3 earthquake, centered in the waters of India's Nicobar Islands, was felt as far away as Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 01:41 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
The epicenter was located 247 kilometers northwest of Sabang City, at a depth of 15 kilometers. Information shared by the BMKG through the South Aceh Geophysical Station indicated that this shallow earthquake was triggered by subduction activity, commonly known as a megathrust earthquake.
The earthquake impacted and was felt in the Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar areas with an intensity scale of II-III MMI. This means the tremors were noticeable indoors and felt distinctly as if a truck was passing by. Fortunately, "modeling results indicate that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami."
The same earthquake was measured by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) at a magnitude of 6.5. The intensity of the tremor around the epicenter reached VI MMI, which is equivalent to tremors strong enough to startle all residents and cause them to scatter, as well as causing plaster to fall and factory chimneys to be damaged.

The BMKG urges the public to remain calm and not be influenced by unverifiable rumors. They also advise avoiding buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake.
The BMKG also recorded a recent magnitude 2.3 earthquake whose effects were felt in Sanggau, West Kalimantan. This tremor, centered on land, occurred at 02:33 WIB and was felt on a scale of II-III MMI.
