Meta Hints at Restricting Public Access to Certain AI Superintelligence Models

1 month ago 28

TEMPO.CO, JakartaMeta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted that the company is unlikely to release its superintelligence AI model as open source. He conveyed this idea in a letter about Meta's vision of "personal superintelligence."

"We believe the benefits of superintelligence should be shared with the world as broadly as possible. That said, superintelligence will raise novel safety concerns," Zuckerberg wrote in a letter quoted in TechCrunch on July 30, 2025. Therefore, he believes that Meta must strictly mitigate this risk and carefully consider what to release as open source.

Meta is known for its open AI model, Llama, which differentiates it from competitors such as OpenAI, xAI, and Google DeepMind. In a 2024 letter, Zuckerberg wrote, "Starting next year, we expect future Llama models to become the most advanced in the industry."

However, from the beginning, Zuckerberg has signaled certain limitations. "If at some point however there’s some qualitative change in what the thing is capable of, and we feel like it’s not responsible to open source it, then we won’t," he said in a podcast last year.

Meta is reportedly changing its strategy after falling behind its competitors. The company is reportedly halting testing of its latest Llama model, Behemoth, to focus on developing closed models. This change occurred after Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI, acquired its founder, and established a specialized unit called Meta Superintelligence Labs.

Zuckerberg emphasizes that Meta's new direction is to bring "personal superintelligence" to consumers through products such as augmented reality glasses and virtual reality headsets. "Personal devices like glasses that understand our context because they can see what we see, hear what we hear, and interact with us throughout the day will become our primary computing devices," Zuckerberg wrote.

When asked about the possibility of shutting down its most advanced AI model, a Meta spokesperson confirmed that the company continues to support the development of open-source AI. "Our position on open source AI is unchanged," the spokesperson said. "We plan to continue releasing leading open source models. We haven’t released everything we’ve developed historically and we expect to continue training a mix of open and closed models going forward."
