TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Thousands of people gathered in London on Wednesday to commemorate Nakba Day, as demonstrations this year took on added significance amid the ongoing war in Gaza and rising tensions across the Middle East.

Nakba, which means “catastrophe” in Arabic, refers to the mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war that followed the creation of Israel. The annual commemoration is observed by Palestinians and supporters worldwide through rallies, marches, and public events.

Large crowds were seen marching through central London carrying Palestinian flags and banners calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and greater international action regarding the humanitarian situation in the territory.

The demonstrations come as the conflict in Gaza continues to intensify, increasing global attention on Palestinian issues and regional stability.

Meanwhile, Iranian state television reported that several European countries are currently holding discussions with Tehran regarding the safe transit of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes, connecting the Persian Gulf to global shipping lanes. A significant portion of the world’s oil and gas exports passes through the narrow waterway.

The reported talks come amid growing concerns over regional security and the possibility of disruptions to international shipping following heightened tensions involving Iran, Israel, and Western countries.

Iranian media did not specify which European countries were involved in the discussions or provide further details regarding the negotiations.

The developments reflect mounting international concerns that instability in the Middle East could increasingly affect global energy supplies and maritime security.
