TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei called on Islamic leaders to unite against a common "true enemy," while accusing the United States and Israel of being "sworn enemies" of Islamic unity.
"My emphatic and repeated recommendation to the rulers of Islamic countries, particularly those in West Asia and along the Gulf, is to identify your true enemy, understand its plan and confront it," Khamenei said in a message delivered on the occasion of the "Islamic Unity Week" on Sunday, as quoted by ANTARA.
As broadcast on national television, IRIB, Khamenei said that the unity of Muslims is very important for achieving a beloved and dominant Islamic civilization.
"The U.S. and Israel are the sworn enemies of this unity and friendship," Khamenei said, emphasizing that the U.S. and Israel are not only enemies of Iran, but also the enemies of the entire Islamic world.
Tensions in the Middle East have escalated following a joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran in late February, which triggered Iranian retaliatory attacks on several neighboring countries in the region with U.S. military assets.
Iran and the U.S. then agreed to a ceasefire in April, followed by the signing of a memorandum of understanding in June to end the military conflict and achieve lasting peace.
However, the deal collapsed last month, with Iran and the U.S. trading barrages for two weeks before U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly ordered a halt to the attacks in a bid to revive dialogue to end the war.
