TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Lewotobi, located in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, erupted again on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 11:05 AM local time. The eruption was accompanied by a thick column of ash reaching high into the sky, approximately 18,000 meters above the peak or about 19,584 meters above sea level.
The Head of Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center of BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency), Abdul Muhari, stated that the status of the stratovolcano is currently at Level IV (Danger). Volcanic ash rain is still observed due to the continuously blowing wind in three directions.
As a result of the eruption, two airports, namely Larantuka Airport and Maumere Airport, had to be temporarily closed due to the impact of ash distribution.
Abdul explained that the eruption demonstrated the exceptionally strong explosive character of Mount Lewotobi, which has a history of both effusive and explosive eruptions.
He stated, "Lava deposits have been observed extending approximately 3,800 meters to the west-northwest and about 4,340 meters to the northeast from the eruption center."
Based on seismograph data, the eruption recorded a maximum amplitude of 47.3 mm and lasted for 6 minutes 26 seconds. Visually, the ash column from today's eruption was observed tilting towards the north, northeast, and northwest.
Abdul mentioned that during the eruption, the weather was relatively clear to cloudy, with air temperatures ranging from 24 to 31 C. The wind was blowing moderately to strongly towards the north, northeast, west, and northwest, carrying volcanic ash dispersion to the surrounding areas.
Abdul explained that a rapid assessment conducted by the East Flores District Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and joint task force revealed that the eruption has directly impacted several villages in the Wulanggitang District such as Nawakote, Klatanlo, Hokeng Jaya, Boru, and Pululera. In these areas, volcanic ash was reported to have fallen with varying intensities.
According to Abdul, the Regional Government through the East Flores District BPBD and the joint task force immediately surveyed the affected areas for monitoring. They also advised and ensured that residents in Pasar Boru refrain from activities within the disaster-prone radius and distributed masks to the affected communities. So far, there have been no reports of casualties or material losses.
"The local BPBD is continuing the data collection. The situation and conditions at the location are observed to be safe and conducive," he stated.
Abdul also urged that during the eruption, people around Mount Lewotobi refrain from any activities within a 6-kilometer radius, and within 7 kilometers from the southwest to the northeast of the eruption center.
In response to this situation, Abdul advised residents and tourists to refrain from activities within a 6-kilometer radius from the eruption center, as well as within the southwest-northeast sector up to 7 kilometers. Preparedness for potential lava floods also needs to be heightened, especially in the river basin areas originating from the peak of Mount Lewotobi, such as Dulipali, Nobo, Hokeng Jaya, and Nurabelen, in the event of heavy rain.
For residents affected by ashfall, it is recommended to use masks or face coverings to protect their respiratory system. The BNPB also emphasized the importance of people remaining calm and following official instructions from the local government.
"And do not spread or believe in information from unclear sources," he added.
