TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Mount Semeru, which stands 3,676 meters above sea level, erupted accompanied by booming sounds on Wednesday night, September 16, 2026.
"An eruption of Mount Semeru occurred at 22:18 WIB (Western Indonesia Time). The eruption was not visually observed," said Agastya Rajendra, an officer at the Mount Semeru Observation Post, in a written report received in Lumajang, East Java.
According to him, the eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 25 mm and a duration of 128 seconds.
"The Mount Semeru eruption was accompanied by booming or rumbling sounds," he stated.
Meanwhile, Isnugroho, the Head of the Lumajang Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), confirmed the rumbling or booming sounds accompanying the eruption.
"Fortunately, there were no adverse effects resulting from the rumbling sounds," he said.
He explained that Mount Semeru's volcanic activity is currently at Level III (Alert/Siaga) status. Recommendations advise the public against conducting any activities in the southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan river, within a 13 km radius of the summit (the eruption center).
"Beyond that distance, the public is also prohibited from engaging in activities within 500 meters of the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan, due to the potential risk of expanding hot clouds and lava flows reaching up to 17 km from the summit," he said.
Furthermore, the public must not conduct activities within a 5 km radius of Mount Semeru's crater or summit, as the area is prone to the danger of ejected incandescent rocks.
The public is also urged to remain vigilant regarding the potential for hot clouds, lava avalanches, and lahar flows along river channels and valleys originating from the summit of Mount Semeru.
"This applies especially along the Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat rivers, as well as regarding potential lava flows in smaller rivers that are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan," said Isnugroho.
