TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An explosion rocked SMAN 72 (high school) Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, on Friday, November 7, 2025, during Friday prayers. This incident resulted in more than 60 people being rushed to the hospital, four of whom had to undergo surgery due to severe injuries to the jaw, head, and face.

The explosion first occurred from inside the third-floor prayer room during the second sermon. It caused the glass to shatter, smoke to billow, and triggered panic among the students and teachers. The second explosion followed a few minutes later from the canteen area behind the school.

The chronology of the explosion began while students and teachers at SMAN 72 Jakarta were performing the Friday prayer. The first explosion originated from inside the third-floor prayer room. "Because the prayer room was full, I was on the terrace," said a 10th-grade student of SMAN 72 Jakarta, I, to reporters at the scene.

The first explosion, which occurred during the second sermon, shattered the glass in the prayer room and caused smoke to billow. Shouts were heard, and students rushed out of the prayer room in panic.

I said the second explosion occurred a few minutes later in the canteen area behind the school. I saw bloodied victims being carried to the School Health Unit (UKS) while waiting for an ambulance.

A teacher asked I to evacuate the victims. I grabbed a stretcher and brought it to the area of the explosion. Upon returning, a soldier who had entered to help evacuate the victims asked I, "Do you know this person or not?"

The officer pointed to a 12th-grade student who was lying down. There was a toy weapon next to him. The child was wearing boots.

Several other students confirmed I's story. ZA, an 11th-grade student, said there was a modified can of drink with a fuse. In addition, there was a small remote nearby.

Z stated that the child wearing different clothes and carrying a toy weapon was quite quiet. "He is often bullied by his friends," said Z.

According to Z, the child often drew weapons and liked to watch violent videos. However, the police have not provided any information regarding the explosion so far.

Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, the Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, could not confirm the presence of terrorist elements in the explosion incident at SMA Negeri 72 Jakarta. He said the police are still investigating the post-explosion scene. "It will be conveyed later, not now. This is still under investigation, our members are still in the field," he said at the Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital, Central Jakarta. "It will be explained later, after the team in the field finds all the evidence and data."

Deputy House Speaker (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad revealed that there were four explosion victims at SMAN 72 Jakarta who had to undergo surgery due to severe injuries. This information was revealed when Dasco visited the victims at the Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital in Central Jakarta.

Dasco revealed that the four victims suffered severe injuries to the jaw, head, and face. "Four of them had surgery, and about 20 are still under treatment," said Dasco.

In total, he mentioned that more than 60 people have been admitted to the hospital since the explosion incident occurred. However, Dasco added that around eight victims are expected to be allowed to return home soon. "About eight will be allowed to go home shortly. From the total of more than 60 who have been admitted since earlier," he said.
