TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said the death toll in the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) surged to 14 people as of 12:30 p.m. local time, while two suffered serious injuries and 11 with minor injuries.

"We are still collecting, verifying, and validating the data on the ground," said the acting head of BNPB's Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Berton SP Panjaitan, in Jakarta on Saturday.

In detail, three fatalities were reported in Sikka Regency, six in Manggarai Regency, and five in East Manggarai Regency.

Injuries were reported in Sikka Regency, Nagekeo Regency, Manggarai Regency, and East Manggarai Regency.

Around 2,000 residents have self-evacuated due to the tremor. "The majority of residents have evacuated the strong shaking and tsunami warning issued after the main earthquake," said Berton SP Panjaitan.

Dozens of damaged homes

Regarding infrastructure damage, 54 houses were severely damaged, nine houses moderately damaged, and 11 houses lightly damaged.

Five health facilities, one educational facility, one Bulog warehouse, three places of worship, and six government offices were also damaged.

Manggarai Regency was one of the hardest-hit areas, with twenty-nine houses severely damaged, nine houses moderately damaged, and nine houses lightly damaged. In addition, five health facilities and one educational facility were also damaged.

Meanwhile, in East Manggarai Regency, 23 houses were severely damaged.

In Nagekeo Regency, the initial reports on the earthquake impacts include severe damage on two houses, one moderately damaged, and two lightly damaged.

Furthermore, two places of worship suffered light damage, and five government offices were affected.

111 aftershocks recorded

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Geophysics Station reported 111 aftershocks detected as of 10:00 a.m. local time following the earthquake. This was confirmed by Arief Tystama, Head of the BMKG Kupang Geophysics Station, on Saturday morning.

He made this statement during a press conference in Kupang with local government representatives and other relevant agencies at the NTT Regional Police Headquarters.

Despite the number of aftershocks, he said seismic activity remained present, with the latest magnitude being 3.8.

While the magnitude had petered out, Arief urged the residents in affected regions to remain vigilant. Meanwhile, the earlier tsunami warning has now been lifted.

Previously, BMKG issued a tsunami alert level of two for several coastal areas in NTT following a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Mbay Village, Nagekeo Regency, on Saturday at 5:58 a.m. local time.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 8.41 degrees south latitude and 121.39 degrees east longitude, approximately 30 kilometers offshore from Mbay and Nagekeo, at a depth of 15 kilometers.
