TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto announced that the Indonesian government has opened the door for foreign hospitals and universities to operate in the country.
"Over the past two years, we have opened many sectors to foreign involvement," said Prabowo in his meeting with European Council President António Costa in Brussels, Belgium, on Sunday, July 13, 2025, as observed through the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.
The former Defense Minister also stressed the importance of cultural and educational cooperation between Indonesia and Europe. He noted that Indonesia's legal system has adopted many influences from Europe.
He also highlighted the common values between Indonesia and Europe, one of which is maintaining peace, which both parties cite prosperity as key to stability.
President Prabowo emphasized his wish to see increased European participation in Indonesia's economy, while seeking to expand to European markets.
Foreign Hospitals Welcomed, But Need Serious Attention
Health observer and Director of Postgraduate Studies at YARSI University, Tjandra Yoga Aditama, welcomed the government's policy to open doors for foreign hospital branches in Indonesia. However, he emphasized that this policy must be met with great scrutiny in order to truly improve the quality of public health.
"There are at least three notes to heed," said Tjandra in his written statement on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
First, Tjandra said, foreign hospitals operating in Indonesia must make a real contribution to improving the quality of health services without social discrimination. These services are also expected to reach Indonesia's corners.
Second, foreign hospitals must not serve solely a certain group of the population. The government must design programs to enhance local hospitals to reach a wider population, especially vulnerable and low-income groups.
Third, Tjandra stressed the quality and availability of human resources in foreign hospitals are vital. "The quality of services in foreign hospital branches and our local hospitals must be maintained," he said.
Tjandra emphasized that just improving hospital services is not enough to improve public health. A strong healthcare system instead depends on primary health services and active promotive and preventive efforts within the community. He also underscored the key role of community in strengthening the healthcare system.
