TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - OpenAI has introduced a new feature called Memory with Search, designed to make ChatGPT smarter and more personalized by combining previous conversations with real-time web searches.
According to TechCrunch, the new capability is part of OpenAI’s strategy to stay competitive with rivals like Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini. Both are also rolling out memory-based features.
Initially available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, except those in the UK, EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, the feature allows ChatGPT to tailor web search results using remembered user preferences.
For example, if ChatGPT remembers that a user is a vegan living in San Francisco, a query like “What are some restaurants near me I might like?” would automatically be refined to “Best vegan restaurants in San Francisco.”
As reported by Antara, users can disable Memory with Search by turning off the Memory setting in the app’s preferences. However, it is still unclear which users have access, though some on X (formerly Twitter) have reported seeing the feature as early as this week.
In addition to web-enhanced searches, OpenAI’s memory system allows ChatGPT to remember past conversations such as user interests or prior questions and apply that context to future chats. This digital memory evolves over time, enabling the chatbot to better understand and meet individual user needs.
For privacy protection, OpenAI assures users that they have full control over what ChatGPT can remember. The chatbot is also trained not to automatically store sensitive information such as health-related history.
