2. Gov't Explains Why Indonesian Textiles Hit with 47% U.S. Import Tariff
Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, after his visit to Washington, the United States, this week, explained that currently Indonesian textile and garment products are subject to import tariffs reaching up to 47 percent, significantly higher than the previous range of 10 to 37 percent.
The tariff increase, according to Airlangga Hartarto, is a direct impact of the additional 10 percent import duty imposed by the United States government.
This extra duty is part of the tariff policy that was carried over and expanded from President Donald Trump's administration, which still affects trade between the two countries.
3. Economist Says Indonesia's US Food Import Plan Clashes with Self-Sufficiency Drive
An economist from Bright Institute, Muhammad Andri Perdana, criticized the Indonesian government's plan to increase food imports from the United States, deeming it contradictory to the food self-sufficiency program. This was in response to Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto's statement that food imports would not disrupt self-sufficiency, as Indonesia has been importing wheat, soybeans, and soy milk from the U.S.
Andri stated that if the imported products were limited to wheat only, the government's justification for increasing imports could be acceptable. "However, when talking about soybeans, it's clear that what the government has been focusing on for food self-sufficiency are the three staples: rice, corn, and soybeans," said Andri when contacted on Saturday, April 19, 2025.
