TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ongoing soil movement hazards in Pasir Munjul Village, Sukatani District, Purwakarta, has destroyed people's homes. "This has been going on since April. Historically, this area is prone to soil movement," the head of the Purwakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Heryadi Erlan, told Tempo on Wednesday night, June 18, 2025.
Officers from the Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) are still running an analysis and reviewing the cause of this natural disaster. "The results are underway, so we don't know the exact cause yet," he said, adding that the study also includes finding safe places to relocate the people.
Based on BPBD data, so far, 58 houses have been severely wrecked, three were damaged, and eight suffered light damage.
Videos and photos released by BPBD showed several houses cracking, tilting, and collapsing, while the roads are crumbling. About 200 affected residents have evacuated to their relatives' homes or the neighborhood unit's office.
The West Java BPBD reported that a meeting to discuss the soil movement disaster was held on June 16, attended by the Regent of Purwakarta, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), BPBD, and PVMBG. During the meeting, PVMBG emphasized that the area affected by soil movement must be vacated and no longer inhabited, while farming and plantations are still allowed.
Meanwhile, the Governor of West Java, Dedi Mulyadi, who visited the location and met with the displaced villagers, stated that the government had decided on evacuating the residents.
"The relocation village is prepared on 1.5 hectares of land," said Dedi in a video on his social media account on Wednesday. The former Regent of Purwakarta said that the village relocation will use the land of PTPN or PT Perkebunan Nusantara, and the houses for residents will be built in the same form.
While the residents' houses are being built in the new location, the evacuees will be provided with rental houses. A total of 69 families will each be given Rp10 million for house rent and living expenses. Dedi urged residents to comply with the governor's directive.
