Pertamax Fuel Sales Predicted to Drop 10 Percent After Price Hike

8 hours ago 11

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Economics lecturer at Indonesia's Padjadjaran University, Yayan Satyakti, projected that 10 percent of the users of non-subsidized fuel Pertamax will switch to Pertalite due to the price increase.

"Taking the experience of April 2022, when Pertamax increased by 39 percent and around one out of eight buyers switched to Pertalite, we estimate Pertamax sales to decrease by around 10 percent," said Yayan, as quoted by Antara on Sunday, June 14, 2026. Yayan assessed that when the price of Pertamax rises, people do not reduce their travel intensity, but rather switch to cheaper Pertalite fuel.

The price of Pertamax (RON 92) which was previously Rp12,300 per liter, has now increased to Rp16,250 per liter. Meanwhile, the price of Pertalite remains stable at Rp10,000 per liter.

He stated that the price difference of Rp6,250 per liter between the two is quite significant. "But the Pertalite quota is still sufficient to accommodate this shift. Only about one-third of the remaining quota will be used," said Yayan.

Yayan also analyzed how the rise in Pertamax prices affects various layers of society. Car owners who refill 100 liters of Pertamax in a month will have to add around Rp395,000 to their monthly budget. Meanwhile, motorcycle riders who use 30 liters per month will add about Rp119,000 to their expenses.

He also dissected the influence of the hike in Pertamax prices based on the government's welfare ranking system, divided into Desil 1-10 categories. For the lowest income group or Desil 1, Yayan stated that they will not be significantly affected because they hardly use Pertamax.

Meanwhile, for the middle class or Desil 5-7, Yayan estimated that some will switch to consuming Pertalite. Furthermore, for the upper middle-class households (D8-D9) as regular car users, they will experience an increase in monthly expenses.

For the wealthiest households or Desil 10, Yayan projected that they will bear the heaviest burden, as company fleets, operational vehicles for plantations, and mines are prohibited from using subsidized fuel. "In short, around half of the total burden of this increase is borne by the wealthiest 20 percent of households. The rise in Pertamax functions like a tax that targets the more affluent," said Yayan.

Regarding the migration of consumers from Pertamax to Pertalite, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga ensures that Pertalite will not experience shortages. In addition, the distribution of Pertalite across all gas stations continues to operate normally according to government assignment.

"We urge the public to use energy wisely by purchasing fuel according to their needs and designated use, as well as according to the type of vehicle used," said Corporate Secretary of Pertamina Patra Niaga Roberth MV Dumatubun.
