TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Police are still delving into the motives of the suspected perpetrator of the explosion at SMAN 72 (High School), Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. "The motive is still being investigated by Densus 88 (Special Detachment 88) and Krimum (Criminal Investigation Bureau) of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police," said the Chief of Public Relations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Jaya Budhi Hermanto, on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
Budhi asked the public to wait. A comprehensive official release of the case will be provided after the collection and analysis of evidence from the crime scene, the results of the search of the suspect's house, and the completion of witness statements. "This is to avoid biased speculation about the motives or the incident," he said.
The suspected perpetrator in this case is none other than a 17-year-old student at SMAN 72. Currently, he is still undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The police did not disclose the hospital where he is being treated. The condition of the suspected perpetrator is said to have improved after surgery on his head. He has regained consciousness.
The explosion at SMAN 72 occurred as the students were about to perform Friday prayers on November 7, 2025. The explosion took place twice, first in the prayer room (musala) and the second in the rear area of the cafeteria. According to the latest data from the Jakarta Metropolitan Police as of Saturday, November 8, 2025, there are a total of 95 victims, 26 of whom are currently being treated in hospitals. Specifically, 14 are at the Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital, 14 at Yarsi Hospital, and 1 at Pertamina Hospital.
During the search conducted at the suspect's house, the police found explosive powder similar to what was found at the crime scene. However, the police have not been able to confirm whether the powder is the same as that found at the crime scene. "Several comparisons were made of the evidence found, including the ones found at the house, and it turns out that there are similarities in several pieces of evidence," said Budhi.
