TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Lieutenant General TNI Suharyanto, stated that the lack of electricity networks has become a constraint on emergency response to the floods in Sumatra. The local government of Central Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra, conveyed this obstacle to the BNPB and the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, during their visit on Sunday, November 30, 2025.
The local government mentioned that the lack of electricity networks has disrupted people's communication with their relatives. Moreover, restoring the electricity network in Central Tapanuli requires helicopters to reach the damage in remote areas.
In response to the complaints, Suharyanto immediately contacted the President Director of PLN (state-owned electric company) and committed to facilitating PLN's technical team with helicopters to reach the damage areas in remote locations.
"We have helicopters at Pinangsori and Silangit airports. Please inform your team, and BNPB will prepare the helicopters for the electricity repair activities," said Suharyanto in a telephone conversation with the President Director of PLN, as quoted from his official statement.
Suharyanto stated that the electricity repair must be carried out immediately because it significantly affects the supply of clean water, internet, and fuel distribution.
From Central Tapanuli, the Head of BNPB and the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture continued their journey to the affected areas in South Tapanuli Selatan. They directly observed the damage to residential areas, equipment, and vehicles caused by the floods in the Hotagodang Village, Batangtoru, South Tapanuli.
At the field post, the Head of BNPB instructed the emergency team to prioritize the area for cleaning by deploying special heavy machinery to clear large pieces of wood.
Central Tapanuli is a significantly affected area by severe floods and landslides. As of Sunday, November 30, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB), data compiled by the BNPB showed that there were 73 fatalities, 104 people reported missing, and 508 people injured due to the floods and landslides.
Currently, Central Tapanuli can be reached through air access from Tapanuli Utara. The land route to Central Tapanuli via Terutung-Sibolga is still inaccessible due to landslides blocking the road at several points.
Meanwhile, the updated data on flood-affected areas in South Tapanuli Selatan recorded 52 fatalities, 48 people reported missing, and 58 people in need of medical treatment.
