TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto added a deputy to the structure of the National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT). Through Presidential Regulation Number 9 of 2026 regarding the BNPT, signed on February 9, 2026, Prabowo overhauled the number of BNPT deputies from three to four.
The new BNPT structure is stated in Article 7. It includes the Deputy for National Preparedness and Counter-Radicalization, the Deradicalization Deputy, the Deputy of Coordination between Law Enforcers and Victim Recovery, and the Deputy of International Cooperation.
This structure changed from the previous BNPT organization. Previously, the counter-terrorism agency had three deputies, including the Deputy of Prevention, Protection, and Deradicalization; the Deputy of Enforcement and Capacity Building; and the Deputy of International Cooperation.
After the issuance of the new presidential regulation, the BNPT deputy retaining the old nomenclature is only the Deputy of International Cooperation. Meanwhile, the other three have new nomenclatures.
In the regulation, the task of the Deputy of National Preparedness and Counter-Radicalization is described as organizing the formulation, coordination, and implementation of policies, strategies, and national programs for combating terrorism in the field of national preparedness and counter-radicalization.
Meanwhile, the Deradicalization Deputy is tasked with organizing the formulation, coordination, and implementation of policies, strategies, and national programs for combating terrorism in the field of deradicalization.
In addition, the Deputy of Coordination between Law Enforcers and Victim Recovery is responsible for organizing policies and coordinating efforts between law enforcement agencies to combat terrorism and implement victim recovery programs for victims of terrorist crimes.
Finally, the Deputy of International Cooperation is tasked with organizing the formulation, coordination, and implementation of policies, strategies, and national programs for combating terrorism at the cross-border level.
The BNPT presidential regulation was issued by Prabowo together with Presidential Regulation Number 8 of 2026 concerning the National Action Plan for Prevention and Combating of Violence-based Extremism Leading to Terrorism for the Year 2026-2029 (RAN PE Presidential Regulation). The document discusses strategies for addressing the potential threat of extremism leading to terrorism.
Through the RAN PE Presidential Regulation, Prabowo stipulates the RAN PE as a guideline for ministries, institutions, and local governments in carrying out prevention and combating programs for extremism over four years, from 2026 to 2029.
