TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has inaugurated the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Chengdu, China. The Indonesian diplomatic representation in the capital of Sichuan Province was established through Presidential Regulation Number 10 of 2026.
Prabowo signed the Presidential Regulation on the Indonesian Consulate General in Chengdu on March 2, 2026. "The Republic of Indonesia opens the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Chengdu, the People's Republic of China," as stipulated in Article 1 of Presidential Regulation Number 10 of 2026.
The aim is to enhance bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and China. "Particularly in Chengdu, especially in the fields of economic cooperation and the protection of Indonesian citizens," as stated in the considerations section.
Currently, Indonesia has three other representations in China besides the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing namely KJRI Guangzhou, KJRI Shanghai, and KJRI Hong Kong. The consular office in Chengdu will be the fourth Indonesian representation in the Bamboo Curtain Country.
KJRI Chengdu is a consular representation under the Head of Diplomatic Representation or Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to China in Beijing. KJRI Chengdu will oversee the regions of Sichuan Province, Chongqing City, Yunnan Province, Shaanxi Province, and Gansu Province.
The number and types of positions required at KJRI Chengdu will be determined by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Regulation. Meanwhile, the funding required for KJRI will be sourced from the budget of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, included in the state budget.
Further provisions regarding the organizational structure, work procedures, as well as the duties, functions, and position levels at KJRI Chengdu will be regulated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Regulation. The aforementioned ministerial regulation must first be approved by the minister in charge of state administrative affairs in the field of the state apparatus.
The plan to open KJRI Chengdu has been under consideration by the Indonesian government since the administration of former President Joko Widodo. Former Foreign Minister of Jokowi's era, Retno Marsudi, once discussed the idea on August 23, 2024, after meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during the 5th Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, Beijing.
