TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto paid a condolence visit to the home of the late Affan Kurniawan, a ride-share driver who was run over by the police mobile brigade's vehicle on late Thursday during a protest in Jakarta. Prabowo came with the Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, and Indonesian Military Commander General Agus Subianto around 10:00 p.m. local time.
"It was probably around 10 minutes," said a resident who shook hands with Prabowo when met at Affan's residence on Friday, August 29, 2025.
Meanwhile, the toll road tycoon Jusuf Hamka arrived earlier at around 7:00 p.m., when people gathered to pray for Affan after his passing, or doing tahlilan. Jusuf also came for Affan's funeral at the Karet Bivac Public Cemetery this morning.
Despite arriving separately, Prabowo and Jusuf departed together through the back road, or Kudus street, where the head of state also came through earlier.
Who Was Affan Kurniawan?
Affan Kurniawan was killed during a protest the previous night after a police vehicle ran him over in the middle of the road. The motorcycle taxi driver was hit by the speeding armored vehicle, which was trying to disperse the protesting crowd. In video footage circulating on social media, it was apparent that Affan did not have enough time to avoid the vehicle when it hit him.
Instead of stopping, the armored vehicle ran over the already fallen Affan. The crowd then chased the vehicle to the Brimob Headquarters in Kwitang, Senen, Central Jakarta. As a result of the incident, people continue to surround the location until tonight, demanding accountability for Affan's killing.
Affan's family said they have accepted his passing, with their sole hope being fair and just punishment for those responsible for his death. "Let my son be the only victim. I've handed it over to law enforcement. Those anarchist officers must be punished just like my child who has passed away," said Zulkifli, Affan's father, his voice trembling after his son's funeral at the Menteng residence, Central Jakarta, Friday, August 29, 2025.
Zulkifli described Affan as the backbone of the family. The 21-year-old youth worked hard as an online motorcycle taxi driver to help his parents. "Affan never complained. Even if he was sick, he continued to work to make his mother and family happy," he said.
According to Zulkifli, his son was not a participant in the protest. That day, Affan said goodbye to work. "My child was an honest person. If he said he was picking up passengers, then he really was. He was afraid of things like that (protests)," he said.
