TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has returned to Indonesia after attending the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Cebu, Philippines. Upon his return, the President immediately embarked on a working visit to Miangas Island, North Sulawesi.
Miangas is Indonesia's northernmost outpost on the border with the Philippines, situated within the Talaud Islands Regency of North Sulawesi. Prabowo touched down at Miangas Airport on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at approximately 10:45 AM local time. The Gerindra Party chief patron was accompanied by Foreign Minister Sugiono and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
Prabowo arrived in Miangas directly via a flight from the Philippines. "He returned to the homeland today, but prior to heading to Jakarta, he made a stopover for several agendas there," Sugiono stated, as reported by the Presidential Secretariat on Saturday.
The President's arrival in Miangas was greeted by several members of the Red and White Cabinet. Among those present were Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.
Also in attendance were Communication and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid, Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, and Deputy Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces General Tandyo Budi Revita.
Prior to his Miangas visit, Prabowo spent Thursday through Saturday in the Philippines. The former defense minister was there to attend the high-level regional summit.
While in the Philippines, Prabowo remarked that conflicts and geopolitical rivalries yield only adverse effects for the public and stifle regional development. Therefore, he emphasized that ASEAN must prioritize dialogue and cooperation as the fundamental pillars of inter-state relations.
Prabowo delivered these remarks during the plenary session of the 48th ASEAN Summit at the Mactan Expo in Cebu. "We must not allow competition. We must not allow our past to determine our present and future. Indonesia is determined to build good neighborly policies," he stated in Cebu on Friday, May 8, 2026, according to the Presidential Secretariat.
