TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government will roll out a national shopping discount program offering up to 80 percent off to mark the country’s 80th Independence Day celebration.

Deputy Minister of State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro explained that the discount initiative is being led by modern retail businesses and shopping centers.

"So there will be a national discount of up to 80 percent initiated by modern retail businesses and shopping centers," Juri said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Friday, August 1, 2025.

In addition to shopping discounts, the government will also offer reduced fares on all forms of public transportation in Jakarta on August 17. That day, all rides on Jaklingko, TransJakarta, LRT, MRT, and KRL will cost only Rp80.

"So for using public transportation in Jakarta, any mode, the fare is only Rp80," Juri stated.

To further engage the public, the government will host a people’s party at the Merdeka Palace courtyard and the National Monument (Monas) area. Around 8,000 invitations will be made available, and the public can register through the Istana View application, which will launch on August 4.

The celebration will feature local culinary delights provided by nearby small and medium-sized enterprises (UMKM).

There will also be a carnival organized by government ministries and agencies. Each institution will decorate vehicles that will take part in a parade, passing from Monas to the Semanggi intersection along M.H. Thamrin and Sudirman streets.

“Independence Day celebrations do not only stop on August 17,” said Juri.

One of the main events following the ceremony is the Merdeka Run 8.0K, an 8-kilometer race scheduled for August 24 in Jakarta.

“The 8.0 figure was chosen to reflect the 80th anniversary of Indonesian independence,” Juri added.

The government has also declared Monday, August 18, 2025, a one-time national holiday. This additional day off is intended to give the public more time to take part in festivities and community competitions.

"The government will make August 18, 2025, one day after the commemoration ceremony of the proclamation moment, the people’s party, and the independence carnival, a day off,” said Juri. He clarified that the holiday applies only for this year.
