TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A powerful earthquake struck Russia in the far east on Wednesday morning. As reported by France 24, the Russian earthquake measured at M 8.8 triggered a tsunami in the northern Pacific region, prompting warnings in Alaska, Hawaii, and along the southern coast of New Zealand.
Tsunami warning sirens were sounded on Tuesday in Honolulu. People evacuated to higher ground.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that a 40-centimeter tsunami was detected in the Tokachi region, on the southern coast of Hokkaido, the country's northernmost main island. The Russian area closest to the earthquake's epicenter in the Kamchatka Peninsula experienced damage and evacuations, but there were no serious injuries.
The first tsunami wave hit the coastal area of Severo-Kurilsk, the main settlement in the Russian Kuril Islands in the Pacific Ocean, according to the local governor, Valery Limarenko. He stated that the residents were safe and remained on high ground until the threat of further waves passed.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated that tsunamis had occurred due to the earthquake, which could cause damage along the coastlines of all Hawaiian islands. "Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property," the warning read. The first wave was estimated to arrive around 7:00 PM local time on Tuesday.
The Oregon Office of Emergency Management announced on Facebook that a small tsunami was expected along the coast starting around 11:40 PM local time. The wave's height would range from 30 to 60 centimeters. Residents were advised to stay away from the coast, harbors, and marinas, and to remain in safe locations far from the shore until the warning is lifted.
"This is not a major tsunami, but dangerous currents and strong waves may pose a risk to those near the water," the department stated.
This earthquake is the strongest in the world since the 9.0 magnitude off the northeastern coast of Japan in March 2011. The earthquake in Japan caused a devastating tsunami that led to damage at nuclear power plants. Only a few earthquakes stronger than this have been recorded worldwide.
