TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, warned Japan that the deployment of offensive weapon systems on the border islands disrupts regional security and stability. Zakharova also stated that this deployment poses a serious threat to neighboring countries, including Russia.
Russia's observations, according to Zakharova, indicate that Japan, under Washington's command, is systematically transforming these islands, particularly Okinawa, into military bases, arming them with weapons that have not only defensive capabilities, but also offensive ones.
The "aggressive militarist course" of Tokyo and such military measures "further escalate tensions in the field of regional security, pose serious risks to neighboring countries, and at the same time justify a firm response to the implementation of Japan's specific plans in this area," she said on Thursday, as quoted by Xinhua and Antara.
Zakharova made the statement at a regular press conference in response to questions about Japan's recent move to deploy intermediate-range missiles on islands near Taiwan and China.
She expressed that the deployment of U.S.-made intermediate-range missiles on the related islands by Japan is unacceptable.
"We are closely monitoring all statements and actions by Japan's leadership in the context of the remilitarization course it has embarked on," Zakharova said.
"Earlier, we have repeatedly drawn attention to the negative impact of Tokyo's such policy on stability and security in our shared region through diplomatic channels, including the delivery of a relevant note by the Ministry, we have issued a stern warning to Japan that the deployment of U.S.-made medium-range missiles on its relevant territory is unacceptable, regardless of the pretext, whether on a permanent, temporary, or other basis," she said.
Meanwhile, Zakharova urged the government of Japan, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, to "return to the foundations on which Japan's post-war peaceful development is built."
"These foundations are enshrined in the outcomes of World War II -- foundations that, unfortunately, as we are once again compelled to note, have not yet been fully acknowledged by Japan," she said.
Japan and China have been embroiled in diplomatic disputes since Beijing strongly criticized Takaichi's response to a parliamentary question on November 7. Japan's first female prime minister said that a military attack on Taiwan could create a "threatening situation" for Japan's survival.
Her statement was interpreted as a signal that her government could allow the Self-Defense Forces to support the United States if China enforces a maritime blockade on Taiwan or uses other forms of pressure.
China was furious with Takaichi's remarks. Beijing summoned Tokyo's ambassador and urged its citizens not to travel to Japan.
