The South Korean football club (K League 1), Ulsan Hyundai FC, announced the appointment of Shin Tae-yong as their new head coach on Tuesday.
"Welcome Shin Tae-yong. Ulsan Hyundai appoints Shin Tae-yong as the 13th coach!" the defending champion club stated through its official social media account.
Shin Tae-yong, the former coach of the Indonesian and South Korean national teams, returns to the K League stage after last handling Seongnam FC in 2012.
Ulsan hopes to achieve success with their new coach. "We warmly welcome coach Shin Tae-yong, who will lead our team to a new glory. With his experience and leadership, we believe Ulsan Hyundai FC will shine again in the K League and international competitions."
Shin Tae-yong's appointment follows the termination of the contract with the previous coach, Kim Pan-gon, on August 3, 2025, after the team's poor performance in the 2025 season. Despite successfully winning the K League 1 title in 2024, Ulsan Hyundai FC is currently languishing in seventh place in the temporary standings with 31 points from 24 matches, without a win in the last 11 games.
Shin Tae-yong, also known by the initials STY, is optimistic about reversing the club's fortunes.
"Since long ago, Ulsan has been considered a strong team in the K League. I am confident that after the difficult times, good days will come. I will use all my abilities to rebuild this reputation," STY said on the club's official website.
Shin Tae-yong has an impressive track record, including leading Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma to win the AFC Champions League 2010 and the Korean FA Cup 2011. He also successfully led the Indonesian national team to the round of 16 in the 2023 Asian Cup and the semi-finals of the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup.
His official debut as Ulsan Hyundai FC's coach is scheduled for August 9, 2025, when they face Jeju SK.
