TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korea and Indonesia have agreed in principle to hand over one of six prototypes of South Korea's KF-21 fighter jet to Jakarta, a lawmaker said in Seoul on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, as their joint development project nears completion.
In talks in February, the two sides agreed to hand over a single-seat KF-21 prototype used for verification tests, such as mid-air refueling, lawmaker Kang Dae-sik said, citing documents from the defense procurement agency.
The handover, valued at about 600 billion won (Rp6.8 trillion), includes the fighter jet worth 350 billion won (Rp3.9 trillion) and other development costs.
The agreement comes as joint development of the KF-21 is scheduled to conclude in June after more than a decade.
South Korea launched the project in 2015 to develop a domestically developed supersonic fighter jet, while Indonesia joined as a partner, agreeing to share development costs in exchange for technology transfer, prototypes, and other provisions.
The Defense Acquisition Program Agency is expected to set a schedule for the delivery of the prototype and related technology documents after Indonesia has fully paid its 600 billion won (Rp6.8 trillion) contribution to the joint fighter jet project.
Indonesia initially agreed to contribute around 20 percent of the total project cost as a partner nation, but later proposed a lower contribution in exchange for a reduced level of technology transfer.
In June of last year, the two countries signed a final agreement to reduce Indonesia's contribution to the current amount.
Concurrent with the prototype handover, Seoul is reportedly negotiating with Jakarta to sign an export deal for 16 KF-21 fighter jets, which would be the first overseas sale of the domestically produced fighter jet.
