Spain's Massive Power Outage: PM Sanchez Vows It Must Not Happen Again

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Tuesday said that the power outage that left most parts of Spain and Portugal without electricity for several hours "should not happen again."

"What happened yesterday cannot happen again," Sanchez stressed. "This event must not be repeated. We understand the media have questions, we have questions too, and we will answer them all," Sanchez said as quoted by Xinhua.

Sanchez said technicians are still investigating the cause of Monday’s power outage, which began at 12:33 PM local time.

He confirmed that electricity demand was at normal levels when the blackout occurred and dismissed speculation that excess renewable energy was to blame, noting that the disruption also impacted output from Spain’s nuclear power plants.

Preliminary findings from the national grid operator, REE, suggest a cyberattack is an unlikely cause. However, Sanchez stated that cybersecurity authorities are reviewing all possible scenarios.

He added that the investigation’s findings will be used to strengthen the security and resilience of Spain’s power grid.

With nearly full restoration of the power supply, Sanchez said conditions have mostly returned to normal. However, he acknowledged that the railway network remains the most heavily affected sector.

The blackout left around 35,000 passengers stranded on long- and medium-distance trains across Spain, prompting the deployment of military personnel for evacuations.

Major train stations in cities such as Madrid, Seville, Barcelona, and Valencia faced severe delays on Tuesday due to accumulated passengers and repositioning of trains that were halted during the outage.
