Spanish PM: Gaza Peace Must Not Mean Impunity for Genocide Perpetrators

TEMPO.COJakarta - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, that peace in Gaza must not be achieved at the expense of justice. As reported by Anadolu, he stressed that those involved in atrocities, referring to Israel, must be held accountable.

"Peace cannot mean forgetting; it cannot mean impunity. Those who were key actors in the genocide perpetrated in Gaza must answer to justice," said Sanchez in an interview with Cadena SER radio station.

Sanchez recalled his experience working at the United Nations (UN) during the Kosovo War, which concluded with war crime convictions for several involved parties. "We have a great deal of work ahead. There are a lot of open questions," he noted.

Spain's Role in the Gaza Peace Process

Sanchez affirmed that Spain and Europe will play a crucial role in the peace process, focusing not only on the reconstruction of Gaza but also on shaping a two-state solution based on international law.

The Spanish Prime Minister did not rule out the possibility of deploying his country's troops as part of a potential peacekeeping force in Gaza.

The Spanish leader added that Madrid will maintain its arms embargo on Israel "until the ceasefire is consolidated and the process moves definitively towards peace."

"It is important that the violence has ended," he said. "And that we now have a window of opportunity for frank dialogue between Israel and Palestine and the recognition of two states."

Sanchez had traveled to Egypt a day earlier to attend the signing of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
